Sorrento House

Designed by Block Architecture Studio on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, the residence, set on a single level, embraces a slower way of living. Every material, opening and curve feels intentional, creating a home that settles naturally into its coastal surroundings rather than competing with them.

Instead of relying on contrast, the architecture builds depth through subtle variation. Limewashed brick, pale timber, soft stone and textured concrete work together to create warmth, while gentle curves soften the otherwise precise geometry. The result is a home that feels calm from the moment you arrive.

Natural light becomes one of the home’s defining materials. Skylights draw daylight deep into the floorplan, transforming transitional spaces into moments of pause, while courtyards introduce changing light and greenery throughout the day. Rather than separating indoors from outdoors, the architecture allows both to exist as one continuous experience.

The heart of the home is an open kitchen and living space that extends effortlessly towards the pool and alfresco terrace. Large openings dissolve the boundary between inside and out, making entertaining feel intuitive while ensuring every everyday moment remains connected to the landscape beyond.

What makes Sorrento House particularly compelling is its discipline. Decorative elements are kept to a minimum, allowing texture and proportion to carry the design. Fine slim tiles wrap the sculptural rangehood, softly veined stone provides quiet contrast, and timber joinery introduces warmth without overpowering the architecture. Each material has been selected for longevity as much as appearance.

Throughout the home, details reveal themselves gradually. Curved walls ease circulation, built forms feel carved rather than assembled, and custom joinery disappears into the architecture. Nothing competes for attention, yet every decision contributes to the overall experience.

The result is a home that feels unmistakably coastal without relying on familiar clichés. Instead, it demonstrates how thoughtful architecture, natural materials and restrained detailing can create spaces that feel timeless, deeply liveable and quietly luxurious.
